What's wrong with furry?

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 16, 2012, 8:24 AM
Rant inspired by the shitstorm that went down on *NinjaKato's newest piece.

Okay. So Sterling creates a piece of art featuring her anthro OC in the costume of a Mortal Kombat character, and lots of MK fantards trundle along to her pic just to accuse her of ZOMG RUINING THE FRANCHISE FOREVAAAAR.

I just... man, I can't get my head around this. So what, the character has a cat head and all of a sudden, people decide to flip their shit and accuse her of being a furfag, killing a franchise and being an attention seeker? I just can't understand the logic of these people. All they have to do is head on over to Google, type in Mortal Kombat rule 34, and then they would see what REALLY kills a franchise.

I think the problem with alot of furry haters is that they get alot of their opinions from bad sources such as ED (and it's also partly because furries themselves don't do much to improve their reputation, for example nearly all furry art sites have whole sections dedicated to porn, giving them the sex obsessed name). Not every single furry artist is obsessed with furry porn. Some draw anthro characters because they enjoy it, and animals have more variation than humans.

Alot of popular game characters are anthro-ish. Ratchet, Daxter, Crash, the fox from Starfox, Gex, Banjo Kazooee... you name it. No one accuses these companies of being ZOMGFURFAGS or their artists. So what gives people the right to bitch at someone who just enjoys drawing anthro characters and calling them a furfag? Nothing whatsoever.
Heck, even the cast of the Lion King are anthro characters, anthro doesn't just mean human bodies with animal parts stuck on.

I know, people have the right to free speech and all that crap but I think there's a difference between making a valid observation and making an insulting sweeping generalisation.

There, I'm done for the day. Just had to push that out there

I don't consider myself a furry. I have been part of some furry comunities. I do know a few furries, and those that I know are good people. I do agree that the furry community has a bad name, and that a lot of the blame can be laid at their feet, that is however still no reason to accuse every single one. So they have porn, who gives a shit, everybody has porn. Take a look around and you'll find porn. Stop bitching about it not your kind of porn. My opinion? People need to shut the hell up about it. I think the only reason these poeple are so openly against it, is because they need an excuse to bitch about something, and furries fit the bill perfectly.

Free speech is all good, but what you use that free speech for determines the respect you gain.

Confusing Anthropomorphic with Furry, Journal I wrote covers it neatly.

to most people furry automatically means someone wants to screw an animal or be one, basically a freak.
while in reality a furry is anyone who draws animal art likes animals(Platonic) or depicts themselves as an animal sometimes even cosplaying as one which is most likely a character or their sona.

:\ you can blame the media for this shit especially the news.

that is the confusion of it. Someone who draws anthropomorphic characters is not a furry. Furry is the name given to someone who, basically, looks to it as a culture - think of it as a pseudo religion.

there are also 2 definitions...and no its a subculture at best more of a community really its very broad while religions tend to be...strict and sometimes insane or at least the people that follow it

Just drawing anthropomorphic creatures doesn't make the artist a "furry" - its just an idea that been around since the Egyptians. Its just someone who draws anthros.

Saying a religion is considered a religion because the people are insane is it itself is an insane notion. Religion is Cultural views, beliefs and the connection of humanity to spirituality (gods and what not). The furry culture definitely has the culture and the spirituality; to believe in that spirituality you need beliefs. It is a pseudo religion (please note the use of the word pseudo)

"spirituality" sorry never seen any of that in the community and yeah its a community not a religion nor even a pseudo-religion nor any beliefs either.
noticed i said -sometimes- insane

in case you havent noticed there is a definition that in itself is extremely broad notice that is the one i used. furry doesnt always refer to someone who takes part in a community which i dont know why anyone wants be called a furry as it seems insultive

Their is spirituality within the culture. Think otherkin. "Oh I was an animal (the species of the avatar) in my previous life" or "I am spiritually connected to this animal (again, the species of the avatar)". It is there and very much prevalent. If you go to furaffinity, one of the adverts that randomly appears is one for hypnotism that can allow you to "communicate with your animal being" or something like that. Its all there. It resembles a religion, hence "Pseudo".

I wish I had a screen shot of a conversation I had with someone. He wanted to be accepted as a furry.
You also get the furry-pride crap flying around and the ones who are not misinformed (thinking anthro art == furry) are spiritual or obsessive.

I'm not about to unlearn all of that when you didn't even know about the spiritual aspects of it all :B
