Commission- Ratchet's adoptive parents by Gashu-Monsata Commission- Ratchet's adoptive parents by Gashu-Monsata
A commission for the wonderful Paul Grzelak of the Insomniac Games forums. He writes Ratchet fanfiction and wanted me to design and paint up Ratchet's adoptive Veldinian parents from his story. They are of course situated on Veldin :)

Never fear for there is more art like this coming! The next piece commissioned by Paul will be a massive undertaking so keep an eye out!

This is sooo beautiful! :) I love the texture and details! Also being adopted myself, this is a very touching piece of artwork.

Nah they aren't, they're supposed to be natives of Veldin from the fanfic done by Paul =P

W00t! Now this looks absolutely amazing :O Paul wanted me to see this, and well I was gonna see it for sure :dummy:
Great to see his 2 characters come to life. They actually look close to how I imagined them too, and they came out beautifully too. The fur rendering is easily the best part, and their faces overall. Still surprised by how tiny Ratchet is too :giggle: and the scenery of Veldin is fantastic!
The only thing that I think could have been better is the premade textures. They're a bit too flat here - does Photoshop have a warp tool? Because with that, you could warp the textures around the fingers/clothing to make them look less flat. I use it when I apply a premade texture to Ace's Seeker outfit (that hexagonal pattern) so it doesnt appear flat on his chest & belly. It would improve the look of this illustration furthermore!

Either way, I bet Paul was pleased with how this came out, and you're doing a 2nd one? Now that will be exciting to see! I'm actually doing a big one for him right now too, but it's going to take me a while...

Awesome effort Mel! :dummy:

Yeah! You're totally right about the texture thing being too flat, I thought that but couldn't find the warp tool. I have found it now though =P

And sweet, I can't wait to see what he's commissioned from you. Is it a traditional piece?

yeah, try and experiment with the warp tool! It'll seriously help with making the textures fit better, without appearing too flat. It helps me a lot! XD

And yes, it's a huge traditional piece :-) I'm in the process of doing concept art for the character(s) involved though, before working with the actual piece. Traditional is trickier, so I have to make sure ALL the colours and designs of the characters are just right before I work on it XD
